iPhone 5 vs Galaxy Note 2: What's The Best Phone On The Market?
Galaxy Note 2
Does the Galaxy Note 2 have what it takes to justify purchasing it over the iPhone 5? (Photo: / New Technik)
Apple announced the new iPhone 5 last week at a highly publicized press conference in San Francisco, Calif., but following the announcement, consumers are reporting several problems with their iPhone 5 including shipping problems and software issues. Despite complaints, the iPhone 5 has been selling extremely well. It  recently became the best-selling iPhone of all time with 5 million sales in the first week.

Despite the success of the iPhone 5, makers of Android phones haven't wavered from their commitment to Google's open-source operating system. Companies such as Samsung, HTC and LG continue to release high-end phones specifically designed with the task of competing with the iPhone 5. The latest piece of innovation is from Samsung, one of Apple's bitter rivals.
In the wake of a $1 billion lawsuit, Samsung has rallied and decided to release a phone that's far different from anything on the market. The Galaxy Note 2, the successor to the Galaxy Note, is a hybrid smartphone-tablet device that offers more screen real estate than any phone and comes packed with some of the most powerful hardware available.
The comparison between the iPhone 5 and the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Note 2 is a closely contested one. Both feature the newest editions of their respective operating systems and both are packed full of processing power. For a consumer looking for new smartphone, it can be difficult to weigh the options. Smartphone buyers can either purchase one of the most popular smartphones in the world or wait in hopes that Samsung will answer with an even better, more innovative device.
Here's how the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 stack up against each other:

Operating system: The iPhone 5 is preinstalled with the newest version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 6. Apple has added more than 200 features to the new operating system, although there are several reports of bugs and other software issues. Though that may be the case, Apple will likely iron out the kinks in the software soon, and users should already be able to use a large majority of the new features without any problems. Among those features is an updated Notifications Center that will provide better information about calendar events, Facebook interactions and more. In addition, Apple has made it easier than ever to sync data between devices using their iCloud service.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ships with the latest version of Android (4.1 Jelly Bean). Android 4.1 Jelly Bean features a host of new features that make controlling the device easier than ever. One of the newest features added to Android is Google's "project butter," which is essentially a manifesto geared toward creating more fluid scrollin and application interactions on all Android devices. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean also features updates to the Notifications Center on the phone and tweaks in legacy applications.
Winner: Tie (iOS 6 vs. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean)

Performance: The iPhone 5 is powered by a new Apple A6 processor. Apple says that the A6 processor is more than 22 percent smaller than its predecessor and has twice the amount of computing power. The A6 processor also has twice the amount of graphical processing power. Apple didn't initially provide specific details about the processing power of the A6 processor, but AnandTech reports that the chip has been discovered to have a dual-core CPU and triple-core GPU after testing. The iPhone 5 has 1GB or RAM.
The Galaxy Note 2 will run on a Exynos 4412 Quad processor that has a quad-core CPU running at 1.6 GHz. The powerful processor is backed by 2GB of RAM and the phone also features at propriety "S Pen" stylus. The Galaxy Note 2 has 16GB of onboard storage and supports up to 64GB of additional memory via microSD.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (Better processor, More RAM, Expandable Storage)

Display: The iPhone 5 contains a highly touted Retina Display that can show pictures at a 1136 x 640 resolution. It has an 800:1 contrast ratio and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on the device that prevents it from being smudged. The screen is 4-inches when measured diagonally, which is slightly larger than previous iterations of the iPhone. Much like other Apple devices that have the company's Retina Display technology, the iPhone 5's screen is noticeably better than those without the technology.
The Galaxy Note 2 has a gigantic 5.5-inch display that trumps every other phone on the market. The display is only 1.5 inches smaller than most low-budget tablets on the market, which gives the phone an especially distinct look. It's not quite a smartphone, but not quite large enough to be considered a tablet. The display shows images at a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution.
Winner: Galaxy Note 2 (Better resolution, Larger screen)

Price: The iPhone 5 is sold in three tiers: It's $199 for a 16GB version; $299 for a 32GB version; $399 for a 64 GB version. Even the cheapest model of the iPhone 5 is more expensive than most Android phones.
"The price of a Galaxy Note 2 on the standard two-year contract is set to be between $199 and $249," reports Phones Review. The unsubsidized version of the phone will be sold for between $800 and $900 according to the report.
Winner: iPhone 5 (Starts at $199)

Cool Factor: The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is definitely an abnormal phone, but we're not sure if that alone makes it cool. It's gigantic in size, and it looks a bit awkward while it's being held next to someone's head because it's so large. If standing out from the pack is the goal, the Galaxy Note 2 will suffice. The iPhone 5 on the other hand is the fastest selling iPhone of all time. That means if you get one, you'll fit right in with millions of other people. The iPhone 5 is slimmer and lighter, but less powerful. If you dress chic, you'll want something less clunky than the Galaxy Note 2.
Winner: iPhone 5 (Iconic design)

Conclusion: The Galaxy Note 2 is a beast, plain and simple. It will be one of the most powerful devices available once it's released. For someone that's constantly working from their mobile device, the Galaxy Note 2 will definitely be worth the money. The extra screen real estate will make it easier to do a variety of tasks including reading long documents and writing detailed emails. The iPhone 5 is fairly comparable in the hardware department, but it's screen is much smaller than the Galaxy Note 2. If you use your smartphone for productivity slightly above average, the iPhone 5 should be a great decision.
In reality, this is a decision between the best Android phone on the market and the best iOS 6 device on the market. If you're a social media specialist, we recommend that you purchase the iPhone because iOS typically gets the best new popular social media apps. If you're more of a hacker type, we recommend Android for it's customizability and its more lenient marketplace guidelines.

Galaxy Note 2 vs. iPhone 5

The Galaxy Note 2 and the iPhone 5 are two of the hottest smartphones on, or entering the market.

While these two devices offer vastly different screen sizes, the success of the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S III like design of the Galaxy Note 2 is drawing the attention of smartphone shoppers.
The iPhone 5 is already in the hands of 5 million users, but as contracts expire and users go looking for a new smartphone, the Galaxy Note 2 and the iPhone 5 are sure to be at the top of many lists.
This iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy Note 2 comparison will help users figure out which device is the best fit for their needs, and hopefully help users deal with waiting for the Galaxy Note 2 release.

Galaxy Note 2 vs. iPhone 5 Display

The iPhone 5 gains a larger 4-inch display with this release, but it’s nowhere near the size of the Galaxy Note 2′s 5.55-inch display.
Galaxy Note 2 vs iPhone 5 Display
Galaxy Note 2 vs iPhone 5 display size.
The larger 5.55-inch HD display of the Galaxy Note 2 bumps the size of the device to 21mm wider than the iPhone 5, pushing the Note 2 into two-hand territory for many users. The Galaxy Note 2 boasts a HD Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution.
On the iPhone 5, the larger screen is widescreen for the first time, offering a better movie watching experience than earlier iPhones. The iPhone 5 uses a Retina Display with a 1136 x 640 resolution. This is not a full HD resolution.

iPhone 4S vs iPhone 5 screen size.
The Galaxy Note 2 display offers a 265 PPI pixel density, which is lower than the iPhone 5′s 326 PPI. A higher pixel density delivers clearer text because users cannot see individual pixels while reading or using the phone. Early reviews say the Galaxy Note 2 display is impressive, and PhoneArena provides a closer look at the Note 2 display.
Galaxy Note 2 Display
The 5.55-inch Galaxy Note 2 display.
Ultimately this comes down to the size of the display and size of the device. Both phones use a 16:9 aspect ration, which means no black bars while watching movies. On the iPhone 5 this means a 4-inch diagonal screen, compared to a 5.55-inch diagonal screen on the Galaxy Note 2.

Users who plan to watch lots of TV, movies and HD content may appreciate the added 1.55-inch screen size. The Galaxy Note 2 also boasts a split screen multitasking feature that allows users to use two applications side by side as seen in the video above. This feature is missing on some of the first units to arrive in the UK, but we’re hopeful it will arrive in the U.S.
The difference in screen size translates into a vastly different size for the phones, as shown in the sizeeasy comparison below.
Galaxy Note 2 vs iPhone 5 Size
Galaxy Note 2 vs iPhone 5 size comparison.
I find larger phones, like the LG Intuition, which measures 139.6mm wide difficult to use with one hand, so it’s something users should keep in mind. When paired with a good Bluetooth headset, the size of the phone becomes less of an issue in my experience.

Galaxy Note 2 vs. iPhone 5 Carriers

The iPhone 5 is available on three major U.S. carriers and several smaller carriers. This includes AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, as well as pre-paid from Cricket Wireless.
The Galaxy Note 2 will arrive on five U.S. carriers including Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, U.S. Cellular and T-Mobile.
We expect that Samsung will release the Galaxy Note 2 on all U.S. carriers around the same date, so users won’t need to jump ship to AT&T like they did with the original Galaxy Note.
The iPhone 5 and the Galaxy Note 2 both feature 4G LTE connectivity, though T-Mobile is not ready for 4G LTE yet. This means unlike last year, there is no speed sacrifice to get the iPhone, and there is no need to sacrifice 4G LTE coverage if the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 arrives on time.
Verizon 4G LTE coverage
Verizon 4G LTE coverage map.
This comparison of the major carriers provides a good look at the network strengths and weaknesses of AT&T v.s Verizon vs. Sprint. While it is iPhone 5 specific, the coverage and speeds are applicable to both phones.
There is hope that the Galaxy Note 2 will support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon and Sprint, but it is not confirmed. The iPhone 5 cannot make calls while using 4G LTE, but the Galaxy S III can do this on both networks.
AT&T and Verizon are the biggest players in 4G LTE, though Sprint is trying to catch up. The video below compares AT&T vs Verizon 4G LTE speeds.

Both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy Note 2 feature 8MP cameras capable of recording in 1080P HD. Below are several samples from each device.
The iPhone 5 delivers a fast shutter just as many users enjoyed on the iPhone 4S, but Samsung is no slouch with early reviews reporting fast shutter speeds for the Note 2.
The iPhone 5 brings a panorama mode to the table for the first time, but Samsung’s camera app delivers many more features such as Best Shot, Best Face, Smile Detection and Burst Mode.

iOS 6 vs. Jelly Bean

The iPhone 5 arrives with IOS 6, the latest version of iPhone software from Apple with new maps, Facebook integration and other features. Samsung puts Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Note 2, Google’s latest version of Android. So, both of these phones feature the latest software features and enhancements.
The videos below highlight some of the best iOS 6 and Jelly Bean features. Samsung includes TouchWiz and S-Voice on the Note 2, offering some extra features and user interface changes.
iOS 6 Features for the iPhone 5

Jelly Bean Features

In addition to the new features the Android and Apple app stores are much closer than in the past. The iPhone still gains a small nod thanks to faster app availability, both in terms of new apps released and all apps working on the iPhone 5 at release, but developers are faster about bringing app compatibility and new apps to Android so this is not as big of an issue as in the past.
One are that is a clear edge for the iPhone is the number of accessories. This is not just in terms of iPhone 5 cases, but actual iPhone 5 accessories that require apps to work, but are not available on Android. One example is the Nike Fuelband.
Samsung users can enjoy features not found on the iPhone thanks to S Beam Share Shot and AllShare. With these features, Galaxy Note 2 owners can share playlists and other items by touching two phones together and can share photos to several Samsung smartphones at once, as shown in the Samsung Galaxy S III promo below.

Galaxy Note 2 vs. iPhone 5 Features

The iPhone 5 and the Galaxy Note 2 both offer 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, but only the Galaxy Note 2 includes a MicroSD card slot to add up to 64GB of extra storage.
The back of the Galaxy Note 2 removes, offering access to the Micro SD card slot and providing the opportunity to remove the battery, something users cannot do with the iPhone 5.
Galaxy Note 2 S Pen
The Galaxy Note 2 S Pen is a stylus that offers added functionality.
The Galaxy Note 2 also packs the S Pen, a stylus that offers control of many functions and ties int special S Note apps. The S Pen can be used for handwriting as well as selecting information on the screen.
  • One of the new features is Air Note, a way to see extra information while hovering the pen over the screen.
  • Popup Note, a notepad that shows on screen if the pen is pulled out while on a call.
  • Quick Command, the ability to send a email, start a call or send a text with a shorthand note.
The video below highlights many of these features and other Note 2 features such as the pop up Web Everywhere and pop up video player..

U.S. Cellular is the only carrier to announce U.S. Galaxy Note 2 pricing, at $299 on contract for the 16GB model. The other carriers will likely follow this price. If the higher capacity Note 2 models arrive at all carriers we expect pricing of $100 per size jump.

UK education sixth in global ranking

By Sean Coughlan BBC News education correspondent.

The UK's education system is ranked sixth best in the developed world, according to a global league table published by education firm Pearson.

The first and second places are taken by Finland and South Korea.

The rankings combine international test results and data such as graduation rates between 2006 and 2010.

Sir Michael Barber, Pearson's chief education adviser, says successful countries give teachers a high status and have a "culture" of education.

International comparisons in education have become increasingly significant - and this latest league table is based upon a series of global test results combined with measures of education systems, such as how many people go on to university.

This composite picture puts the UK in a stronger position than the influential Pisa tests from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) - which is also one of the tests included in this ranking.

The weightings for the rankings have been produced for Pearson by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Global competition

The two education superpowers - Finland and South Korea - are followed by three other high-performing Asian education systems - Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

    South Korea
    Hong Kong
    New Zealand

The UK - which is considered as a single system, rather than four devolved administrations - is then ranked at the head of an above-average group including the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.

These are ahead of a middle-ranking group including the United States, Germany and France.

At the lowest end are Mexico, Brazil and Indonesia.

These comparisons draw upon tests that are taken every three or four years, in areas such as maths, science and literary - and so present a picture lagging by several years.

But the intention is to provide a more multi-dimensional view of educational achievement - and create a databank which will be updated, in a project that Pearson is calling the Learning Curve.

Looking at education systems that succeed, the study concludes that spending is important, but not as much as having a culture that is supportive of learning.

It says that spending is easier to measure, but the more complex impact of a society's attitude to education can make a big difference.

The success of Asian countries in these rankings reflects the high value attached to education and the expectations of parents. This can continue to be a factor when families migrate to other countries, says the report accompanying the rankings.

Looking at the two top countries - Finland and South Korea - the report says that there are many big differences, but the common factor is a shared social belief in the importance of education and its "underlying moral purpose".
Teacher quality

The report also emphasises the importance of high-quality teachers and the need to find ways to recruit the best staff. This might be about status and professional respect as well as levels of pay.

The rankings show that there is no clear link between higher relative pay and higher performance.

And there are direct economic consequences of high and low performing education systems, the study says, particularly in a globalised, skill-based economy.

But there are less straightforward and conflicting messages about how schools are organised.

The ranking for levels of school choice shows that Finland and South Korea have among the lowest levels of school choice. But Singapore, another high performer, has the highest level. The UK is among the upper levels in terms of school choice.
'Significant' data

Higher levels of school autonomy are a characteristic of many higher performing systems - headed by China, the Netherlands, the UK and Hong Kong (which is considered as a separate school system in such education rankings).

But Finland, the most successful system, has a relatively low level of school autonomy.

Sir Michael Barber, a former adviser to Tony Blair, said that the gathering of this information was the "start of something significant" - providing a practical resource for policy makers wanting to learn from other countries.

In terms of the UK's performance, he said it fitted into the view that education standards had risen at the end of the 1990s and into the early 2000s and had then levelled off.

Labour's education spokesman Stephen Twigg said the findings reflected the achievements of the previous government.

"This report shows that after 13 years of investment and reform with Labour, schools in the UK are amongst the best in the world."

And he said the findings did not provide evidence for the current government's support for free schools.

"This shows there is much more to school performance than structures," said Mr Twigg.

Using your smartphone before bedtime NOT a Good idea, Find out Why

Despite it being a pretty bad habit, it is estimated that 95% of people use some kind of a gadget before sleep, be it for texting, surfing the web, or watching TV. Perhaps not all of them realize that doing so makes it difficult to fall asleep afterwards.
